It’s Valentine day special and you have asked that one person for a date and they finally said yes! So what are your first steps apart from looking good? Your first date can make or break the deal. Thus, you’ve got to get your mind right before a date.
Your table manners, your speaking skills even the way you treat the waiters speaks volumes about your character!
Here are the top 10 things you shouldn’t say on your first date!
Valentine day special
- “My last relationship was the BAD - BAD” - There’s no need to talk about your last relationship on the brink of what could be your next one. Don’t go on about how you were wronged, what they did, or what you did to someone else. It not only makes you look immature and selfish because you’re talking nonstop about you, but also prevents you from enjoying this date.
- “You look skinner/ chunkier” - It does not matter who your date is, NO ONE likes to be criticized! It’s not well-meaning, it’s just mean. If their weight, hair color, or clothes really bother you, maybe they’re not a perfect match for you. Your date should feel like they are swaying you off your feet and giving you the ultimate heart-eyes! Be kind & humble.
- Bzzz-Bzzz – Don’t worry about a phone call or a text but let your date feel like they are the highlight of your evening. You can take that call and let the caller know that you are busy!
- “Okay…. moving on…” - Be interested to be interesting, REALLY listen to your date and all the stories they have in mind for you to tell. Say things like “That is so nice to know. tell me more”
- “You don’t look comfortable”- Make your date comfortable, blend in with your date really well, ask them about their day. If you feel like your date is shy and getting anxious, let them know about the things you liked about their outfit. Shower them with compliments and pay attention to detail!
- *Crickets* (Absolute silence) – Comfortable silence is nice but what about that awkward pin drop kind-a-silence? When you are out of all options and topics, you thought you would talk about hobbies, food, books, music, favorite artists in different fields, eye-pleasing colours, dream destinations, work, education, pets if any or if they want any, preferences – Tea or Coffee, you can talk about how they like their food and how they prefer their food. Eg, if you have ordered a pizza, you can talk about the sauce and the base and what base does your date prefer, what was their worst/best experience with food. Try holding a conversation but be careful about when to drop it.
- “You look different in your pictures” - Even if your date looks a little different from their pictures, don’t make them feel like they look better ONLY when photographed. Making someone feel like they look captivating may make them feel like you are interested in them.
- “In my opinion…..”- Be calm about your loud opinions, don’t pitch in your opinions about sensitive topics up front, get to know your date’s stand on things too before unintentionally offending them. This could be a serious turn-off.
- I ordered ‘……’ for you – NEVER order for someone else no matter how much you think you know them, let the other person have a choice on what they would like to eat, if you’ve been waiting for a while and you think your date could use some snack, drop them a text and ask them what would they prefer when they get here, could be a drink, some light snack to start off your date night or just water!
- “So tell me about your ex…” – First of all, don’t talk about your ex and NEVER ASK about your date’s ex. Let them ease into it if you want someone to be confined in you, give them the right amount of space and time. Let them feel like you are the one true best friend they need because a good relationship begins with a great partnership!
At the end of the day, first dates are all about getting to know someone and having fun! Don’t panic about the best way to impress them, be patient, welcoming, have a sense of humor and be confident. Remember, if you two don’t click, or they don’t seem responsive, that’s okay. There are many fish in the sea but we hope you find your lobster! All the best readers!
